Chevrolet Corvette C5
1997-2004
HPDE Overview
The C5 Corvette is the greatest performance value in the history of the American automobile. The LS1 V8 produces 345-350 hp (405 hp in the Z06 LS6) with legendary LS-family reliability, and the transaxle layout gives the car a near-perfect 51/49 weight distribution. At 3,200 lbs, the C5 is lighter than most modern sports sedans while producing supercar-level power. On track, the C5 Z06 is devastating. The combination of 405 hp, sub-3,200 lb weight, and excellent suspension geometry means the car is competitive with vehicles costing two to three times as much. The T-56 6-speed manual is strong and precise, the brakes are large, and the LS engine produces massive torque that makes every corner exit effortless. The C5's low seating position and excellent visibility give the driver outstanding situational awareness. The C5's biggest weakness is its rear suspension design. The trailing arm rear setup with a single transverse leaf spring is simple and effective but lacks the adjustability of a multi-link system. Competitive C5 racers eventually upgrade to an aftermarket control arm setup for maximum corner exit traction.
