HPDE Overview

The ZL1 1LE is the most extreme track car GM has ever sold to the public. The supercharged LT4 produces 650 hp, and the 1LE package adds DSSV (spool-valve) dampers from Multimatic — the same damper technology used in the Ford GT, Aston Martin Vulcan, and the Cadillac DPi race car. The result is a car that handles with a precision that its 3,900 lb weight should not allow. The ZL1 1LE's DSSV dampers are unlike anything else in production. They react faster than MagneRide, provide better body control, and maintain consistent performance through heat and repeated stress. Combined with the massive front splitter, dive planes, and rear wing, the ZL1 1LE generates meaningful downforce that increases grip at high speeds. The 10-speed auto is actually the better choice for track use — it shifts faster and can handle the supercharged torque without concern. The manual is strong but the 10-speed extracts more performance from the package.

Strengths

DSSV dampers (1LE) are the most advanced production dampers ever — same tech as Ford GT and DPi race cars650 hp supercharged LT4 is devastating on any straight1LE aero generates real downforce — splitter, dive planes, and wing work together10-speed auto shifts faster than most DCTs and handles abuseElectronic LSD manages massive torque effectively

Weaknesses

Extremely heavy at 3,900+ lbs — massive brake and tire costsLT4 supercharger heat-soaks like the C7 Z06 — needs cooling upgradesTerrible visibility makes traffic awareness challengingConsumable costs are staggering — budget $800+ per track dayDSSV dampers are expensive to service ($500+ per corner)
Why People Love It

The ZL1 1LE is the ultimate American track weapon. The DSSV dampers give it handling that should be impossible at this weight. The LT4 supercharger provides relentless power. And the 1LE aero package generates real downforce that you can feel at speed.

Why People Hate It

The consumable costs are astronomical. Brakes, tires, and fuel at this power and weight level will drain your bank account. The supercharger heat soak is infuriating. And the visibility is so bad you might as well be driving blind.

Best For

Supercar-performance seekers on a relative budget, NASA GTS1 competitors, and anyone who wants the ultimate GM track weapon.

Not Ideal For

Budget-conscious drivers, anyone who values visibility, or people who track in hot weather without cooling upgrades.
